Aloha Friday, Best of the Year
Yay, it's Friday! Normally, Friday means taking it easy, but not at this time of year. This time of year for me at work means writing performance evaluations, 16 of them. Ugh! They are time consuming enough, but to make matters worse, I got a late start on them this year, so I am under much pressure to get them done! So, while I can't kick back and relax at work today, at least there's Aloha Friday in Blogland.
Wordless Wednesday, Mountain Beauty
What is it about this time of year?! I just can't find the time to write! And what is it about December that makes us go out of our minds?! Thank goodness for Wordless Wednesday, so I can share a few pictures from our trip to Asheville, NC and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Thanks to hubby for a great relaxing getaway in the midst of the madness. I swear I'll make time to write about our trip and everything else that's been going on, but for now just a few peaceful images.

Music Monday, Southern Sweetness
Happy Music Monday, everyone. I'm late getting my post up today, because I just got back from vacation, and when we got home at 1:00 this morning, I was too exhausted to do anything but shower and sleep.
I can't wait to tell you all about my trip to Asheville, NC, and share some pictures of the sights, and most importantly, the food! We had an amazing breakfast at Tupelo Honey Cafe in Downtown Asheville, on the day we arrived. I had a sweet potato pancake with pecans. It was so good, so filling, and so big. Unfortunately, I was so hungry, it didn't last long enough for a picture, so you'll just have to trust that this food was absolutely A...MAZING! More about my trip later, but for now a song to represent the delightfully sweet southern taste of Tupelo Honey.

Music Monday, My First Cassette
When I was 8, I got my first stereo, for Christmas. The stereo had a cassette player, so my Dad also bought my first ever cassette. It was Alvin & the Chipmunks Go Hollywood. It had a whole lotta hit songs from movie soundtracks, and I couldn't get enough of it! I would practice singing "You're the One that I want" from Grease, and act out each part. I would shadow box to "Eye of the Tiger", and practice my nonexistent ballet skills to "Fame."
It was a great Christmas present (the stereo was nice, too.) In honor of that great Christmas gift, I give you the classic Christmas song from Alvin and the Chipmunks, "Hurry Christmas Don't be Late."
Enjoy the song, but, I'm really okay with Christmas taking it's time getting here, because I'm so not ready!

Music Monday, Comfort of the Season
I finally got some of my holiday lights and decorations up this weekend. It's so tiring, but I love the way the house feels with all the lights on at night. It's just so comforting. I'm sure in a month I'll tire of it all, but right now, I'm thinking "let's just keep them up all year!"
So, since it's Music Monday and the lights are up, why not a little holiday music to go along. Here's a few I find comforting.

Aloha Friday. Do you Pinterest?
Happy Aloha Friday! I didn't think I could get into another social media site. I tried google+ but I'm just not feeling it. But, Pinterest, that's different! I just started "pinning" yesterday and I love it! It's more than just another social media site. It's somewhere to keep images you find online that you like. You just see something you like, hit the "pin it" button and then choose which of your boards you want to organize it on. Hubby thinks he likes it because it might keep the house "clutter free." He'll like it even more if I can get rid of my magazine collection. I just love really cool pictures!

Don't diet on Thanksgiving, it just annoys your family!
Hope everyone has an awesomely fabulous Thanksgiving! And if you're on a diet, give it up for today, if not for yourself then for your family... seriously, reminding everyone that you're on a diet is not fun for the holiday! After all, you want to remembered for how fun you are at the holidays, not for how much you nagged everyone else. So, if you must diet do it quietly. Your family will thank you for it...and giving thanks is what it's all about!
Enjoy the day and all that goes with it! Here's wishing you and your family the happiest of Thanksgivings.

Rockin' but not Quite Rollin' in My Heelys
You've seen kids rolling by in their Heelys shoes, right? They almost seem to float by as if powered by some secret magical source. Have you ever thought about how cool it would be to have your own Heely's? You could roll through the grocery store, or wear them at work and float your way to the copier! That would be so cool, right?! That's what I thought when Heely's offered to send me a pair for review.

Trust Yourself, It Could Be Cancer
I wasn't on my death bed. I wouldn't need to have chemo or radiation to give me a chance. Hell, the first doctor never even mentioned the "C word". He said to take some pills and have another biopsy in a few months, and we would just go from there.
I should have asked more questions of the doctor, but he was new to me, and he just didn't have that "I'm willing to spend time to answer your questions" feel about him. So, I made the appointment for the next biopsy, took my prescription and left.
Over the next couple days, I started thinking about what was going on with me, and wondering what my diagnosis really meant. I began researching what the pathology report said, and wondering if I was misreading it. This can't be right. The doc acted like it was no big deal.
I really began to question his plan of care. "Why were we waiting to act?" "Couldn't things worsen?" "Did he not listen to me at all?"
Then I questioned myself. "Why didn't I ask more questions?" "How could I just accept it and leave?"
and then, "He's the doctor, why am I questioning him?" "I should just do what he says."
But, I couldn't stop feeling like something wasn't right. I wasn't comfortable with that doctor, and I needed to see another one. But, there was no guarantee that a new doctor would listen either. So, I began the prescription and planned to wait until the next biopsy.
After a week, I had severe cramping and extremely heavy bleeding. Because of pre-mature menopause, I hadn't had a period in 2 years, and for the last 5 years they had been very mild. I was not at all prepared for this. The cramping was so severe I could barely stand up straight, and I was so exhausted, I felt like I was a zombie walking through the motions of my day. On my days off, all I did was sleep. There was no way I could deal with 3 months of this, I had to get a second opinion.
My dear friend referred me to The Women's Group of Tampa. She raved about her experience with them for the last 10 years, and insisted that it would be a different experience. And, she was so right!
In all my past experiences, I was already in a backwards gown trying to keep a thin piece of paper wrapped around me to keep my butt from getting frost bite when the doc would walk in, shake my hand and promptly tell me to lay back, scoot down, put your feet in the stirrups and open up and say "aah."
Not this doctor... Nope! This gynecologist actually met with me with my clothes on! And, she listened to me! We spent close to an hour talking so she could get to know me, and make sure she was providing me with the best options. Never before had I experienced such great service from a doctor!
She explained that the option provided by the other doctor was valid, if, I was trying to have more children, but given that I was already menopausal the best treatment would be a total hysterectomy. She then referred me to Moffitt Cancer Center for the procedure. The first doctor had never mentioned the "C word," but that was what we were dealing with. I had very early stage Uterine Cancer, but the pathology report was incomplete, so we didn't know how fast it would progress.
Moffitt's care was amazing. They, too, took the time to make me feel comfortable and explain all my options, and their recommendations for treatment. In the end, I had a total hysterectomy and they removed my tubes and ovaries. They found no progression in the stage, so I wouldn't need any further treatment. But, there was one complication...the back side of my uterus, (the part you wouldn't get with a biopsy,) the cells on the back side of my uterus had grown so much, that my uterus had actually fused to my rectum. The surgery took and extra hour to complete the delicate removal of those cells without perforating my colon.
Given the added complication, I can't help but think "What if?" "What if I hadn't questioned my doctor and got a second opinion?" "What if my friend hadn't referred me to her doctor?" "Would those cells have broken through my colon?" "Would we have caught it in time?" What if...
But, the surgery was successful, and I'm cancer free. I'm very grateful to be one of the lucky ones to have caught it early. I'm grateful for my friend who encouraged me to see her doctor, and I'm grateful for the fabulous care I received.
I've learned from this experience, and I can't stress enough the importance of trusting yourself!
Trust yourself! If something doesn't feel right, ask questions, and don't let your doctor shut you down!
Trust yourself! If your doctor isn't listening... don't be afraid to find another one!
Trust yourself! No one knows your body, like you do!

How to Use Gift Cards to Save on Holiday Shopping
I know Halloween isn't even here, yet, so it seems early to think about holiday shopping, but... It is never to soon to think about ways to save on holiday shopping!
Before you know it, it will be Thanksgiving, then Black Friday, and then, sure enough, it's Christmas Eve, and you're rushing to get it all done! And, if you're waiting 'til the last minute, you're probably not saving!
So here's my plan to save on holiday shopping, now. First, I'm heading over to PlasticJungle.com to buy discounted gift cards. Plastic Jungle has no fees, and shipping is always free, and with their great selection of stores and restaurants, you're sure to find a discounted gift card that you want.
Here's how I'll use them for my holiday savings this year:
I'm sure you've got those picky people on your shopping list that cause you too much of a headache to do any real shopping for. So, for these picky people, you can make them happy with a gift card they want, but at a discounted price that you like. At Plastic Jungle, you can buy a discounted gift card, and save up to 35%!
Buying discounted gift cards for gifts, that's a no-brainer, but have you ever thought of buying a discounted gift card for you to do your shopping with? That's exactly what I'm going to do!
I love shopping at Kohl's because they always have great deals, and they always have coupons for 15-20% off their already low prices. So, I'm going to buy a discounted Kohl's gift card and save up to 16 % off. Before I even start shopping, I'll already be saving. Combine that with all those great coupons and deals, and WOW! That's some smart shopping!
I don't know about you, but at the holidays, I tend to go over board with shopping. I forget all about my budget, and just keep on shopping until I don't have anytime left. Then I spend January trying to catch up on my debt. But, this year will be different. This year, I'm only going to shop with gift cards. By buying my gift cards in advance, I'll know just how much I can spend, and I'll stick to that budget. I can buy a discounted Home Depot card, (and save 7%) for all those DIY gifts, and some of my holiday decor needs. Since Bath and Body Works always has good deals, and all those fun soaps make great gifts for the girls, I'll pick up a discounted Bath & Body Works card and save 12% before I've even used any coupons!
This year, PlasticJungle.com will be key to my big holiday savings, and to staying on budget. And, after the holidays, if I get any gift cards I don't want, instead of forcing myself to find something with it, I'll sell the gift card and get up to 92% of the value!

disclosure: I received a gift card for my review of Plastic Jungle. All words and opinions expressed are my own.
Aloha Friday, Scary Movies
Happy Aloha Friday! I can't believe it's Friday, already! This week has really flown by. My brother has been here for the past week. He's in the Army and just got back from 2 years in Korea. It's been so nice hanging out with him. We've mostly been watching movies, (some scary ones, which are not my favorite,) but it's been great just to spend time with my little brother!
My aloha Friday question for you:
Do you like scary movies?
Wordless Wednesday, Hospital View
This was the view from my hospital room at Moffitt Cancer Center. Moffitt did my hysterectomy last week because of cancerous cells in my uterus. They have been so helpful and kind through this whole process. I hope no one has to receive cancer treatment, but if you ever do, I highly recommend seeking help at Moffitt. I couldn't ask for better service!

Aloha Friday, What kind of patient are you?
Monday was my hysterectomy, and though the surgery took a little longer than expected because of a small complication, overall, it was successful. I'm happy to say I am now cancer free! I'm recovering at home which involves a lot of napping, and movie watching, (thanks for your great movie recommendations last week.) It's only been a few days, but it seems like weeks, already. Hubby is great at taking care of me, but I'm really a terrible patient. I hate having to ask for things, and then when I do ask, I want it right away. I also forget to take my meds, and then complain when something hurts. Bless him for his patience!
My question for you this week:
Are you a good patient?
Music Monday, What's Your Favorite 80's Love Song?
It's Monday, and you know what that means?! Music! At Monday's Music Moves Me, it's 80's day. I'm a child of the 80's, so picking only a few songs was hard. The 80's was full of fun dance songs, but there were also some lasting love songs. Here's a few. Hope you enjoy and have a happy Music Monday 80's style!
1983
1984 (one of hubby's faves)
1985 (I think I wore out my cassette tape on this one.)

Aloha Friday, We're Talking Movies here!
Finally, it's Friday!! Happy Aloha Friday! The day to take it easy and prepare for the weekend. For me this is my last Friday at work for awhile. On Monday, I will be having a hysterectomy to get rid of some nasty cancerous cells. I'm not looking forward to the surgery, but I'm looking forward to kicking cancer's ass! And, I plan to make the most of my time out of work by getting caught up on some rest, reading, writing, and movie watching!
My question for you:
What movie(s) can you watch anytime?
I have a few of them: Grease, The Big Chill, Dirty Dancing, Mamma Mia!, and Rocky Horror Picture Show (hmmm do you see a theme here? Yes! They all have great soundtracks!)

Enter to win a Bed Upgrade in the REMedy Giveaway
It only took a week of sleeping on a dorm bed for my daughter to start complaining of a backache, and being tired. As a freshman in college, she has so much going on, the last thing she should have to worry about is sleeping comfortably. The dorm beds just don't provide enough comfort and support for a good night's sleep.
This is where the REMedy Bed Upgrade Kit comes in. As soon as I could, I brought it to her dorm. The kit comes with a gel memory foam pillow, and a gel memory foam mattress pad in a reusable duffel bag. After sleeping on it for one night she called me and told me how good she slept. She said it was so comfortable and her back wasn't hurting anymore.

Music Monday, A Little Bob Dylan
No theme this week on Monday Music Moves Me, It's a freebie week. I was listening to Adele, and her version of Bob Dylan's song "Make you Feel My Love" and it got me to wanting to hear the original. This is what led to me sharing some of my favorite Bob Dylan songs with you this week.
I saw a comment on YouTube that said "Bob never sang with his voice, he sings with his soul." I think that describes Bob Dylan perfectly! When he sings you feel the passion he has in every word. I hope you enjoy his passion as I do.
Have a happy Music Monday!

Aloha Friday, New Orleans Burlesque
I will be away from home and Gasp, away from my computer, this weekend. I am taking a road trip with my husband and some friends to New Orleans. We will be enjoying all the great local food and music that NOLA has to offer. While we are there, so is the New Orleans Burlesque Fest, so we will be going to a show at The House of Blues, and I can't wait! I love the old Burlesque style, including all the cheesy Vaudeville style comedy performances. It is sure to be a good time!
So, since I'll be taking it easy in the Big Easy this weekend... I want to know...
